Samsung Ends Support for DeX App on Windows with One UI 7

Although Samsung is not disclosing many details about its upcoming One UI 7 update, one significant change has been made public. A recent update on Samsung’s UK website states that when One UI 7 is released, the DeX app for Windows will no longer be supported.

What is DeX?

For those who don’t know, DeX, which stands for Desktop eXperience, enables Galaxy phone owners to project the screen of their device onto a computer. It allows you to use your phone like a desktop and is an excellent tool for file transfers.

What’s Changing?

A notice regarding the change can be found on Samsung’s website:

The last version to support DeX for Windows-based PCs will be One UI 7. To connect their PCs and mobile devices, we advise users to use the Link to Windows feature instead.

You will therefore need to switch to Link to Windows, which provides comparable features like file sharing and notifications, if you currently use the DeX app on Windows. Link to Windows has the advantage of being integrated into the Windows operating system and compatible with devices other than Samsungs.

DeX is Still Around

The good news is that DeX will continue to exist. For a desktop-like experience, you can still use it to connect your Galaxy phone straight to a keyboard, mouse, and monitor. However, this change may impact your workflow if you depend on the Windows app.

Other Changes in One UI 7

One UI 7 is removing more features than just this one. In order to further streamline the interface, Samsung also intends to discontinue support for downloading third-party edge panels. It’s evident that some tools will be left behind even though leaks indicate One UI 7 will include some design and feature updates.

What’s Next?

It’s unclear if One UI 7’s new features will compensate for the loss of third-party edge panels and the DeX Windows app. As the update draws near, Samsung users should begin getting ready for these changes. Stay tuned for more updates as they come in.
