Apple’s Secret Smart Glasses Are Coming—But Here’s Why the Wait Will Be Long

Earlier this year, Apple launched its Vision Pro headset, but it didn’t become the big hit the company had hoped for. Now, Apple is reportedly working on something new smart glasses, which it hopes will be a game-changer in wearable tech.

Apple’s Hidden Smart Glasses Project Revealed

Apple’s secret project for smart glasses, reportedly called “Atlas,” is still in the early stages. Right now, Apple is running internal focus groups to gather feedback on the idea, with a team called Product Systems Quality leading the effort. The company is asking employees about their preferences and thoughts on smart glasses, hoping to better understand what people want and what the market looks like.

This approach is similar to how Apple developed products like AirPods and the HomePod, and even the Vision Pro headset. Apple wants to learn what users want and deliver an AR experience that’s a step ahead of current options.

Even though Apple is interested in smart glasses, it may take at least five years before they’re ready. Other companies like Meta and Snap already have smart glasses available and are working on advanced AR models, but Apple is focused on meeting its high standards for quality and tech.

The plan could start with a lightweight and stylish pair of glasses that connects to the iPhone, using the phone’s power to create an AR experience. This could make it easier to develop, while ensuring the glasses are smooth and reliable for users. Later, Apple aims to create fully standalone smart glasses that don’t need to connect to any other device. This would mean Apple has to make advances in battery life, chip design, and display tech.

In the meantime, Apple is also working on a Vision Pro 2 headset, expected to arrive by 2025 or early 2026, featuring an advanced M5 chip for a better AR experience. However, plans for a lower-cost Vision Pro seem to be on hold, possibly due to concerns about demand.
